Umpire Training

You are taking your first steps into a brand-new world. Many of you have played baseball in some compacity or another, everything from sandlot ball to rec ball to competitive. Those experiences will offer some familiarity to this new experience you are about to undertake. Being a good umpire will take a lot of work, practice, and confidence in yourself. We will give you all the tools you need to be a good umpire. Once you finish this training, you will have a new understanding of this incredible game. Are you ready to get started? Any questions in relation to the info below, please feel free to e-mail the UIC, Aaron Garnett, at [email protected] and he will respond as soon as possible.

Training Program:
Our training program for the 2024 season has been set. This program will consist of three (3) in-class training sessions and one weekend for field training. The classroom sessions cover different parts of becoming an umpire, review of the rules for both MLB and LSBA, and positioning on the field. These classes run between 2.5 to 3 hours long and are usually done during the week. They are a requirement for all 1st year umpires.

We will host a Field Training session that focuses on the positioning and mechanics of an umpire. This session is a weekend event and attendance is required at both the Saturday and Sunday training sessions. The Saturday training will be learning mechanics, positioning and working drills to understand how to move on the field. The Sunday event will be live games where you will be working in the full capacity of an umpire. Both days of the Field Training are required for completion of the training program and are a requirement to receive assignments for games. If you are unable to complete all of the training due to a school event or family emergency, please contact Aaron Garnett to make arrangements to complete the training.

When attending any of the training events, please come prepared to work and learn. When we are at the field, please wear your complete umpire uniform and bring all your umpire equipment as we will have live game simulations that you will be working behind the plate and in the field. If you do not have gear, LSBA does have protective gear for umpires to use during the season.
